The band and its people
THRENODY based in Schiedam, Holland, were founded in 1988. With two demos "Ode to the lamented" (1990) and "Profanation" (1992) the band established themselves an excellent reputation in the undergroundscene. In 1993 the band signed a deal with Massacre Records and the Debut album "AS THE HEAVENS FALL" was released. It was well acclaimed as an original and progressive Death Metal album by the press in the Metal scene.
After having the third drummer change within three years and an European tour with MALEVOLENT CREATION the band entered the studio again to record their second album "BEWILDERING THOUGHTS" with producer Gerhard Magin. This album was a big step forward for THRENODY, they changed their style to a more groovy and straight sound mixed with progressive parts and almost left the Death Metal field. The album was highly acclaimed by the press and the band could double the sales of their debut.
After a Benelux tour the fourth drummer Richard van Leeuwen (to Frozen Sun) left the band. But with Ernst van Ee (Helloise, Ex-VENGEANCE) THRENODY managed to get the best Dutch drummer to replace him. Also the replacement of guitarist Erik v/d Belt for Menno Gootjes (Focus) made the band leap forward in numerous ways.
September '96 the band entered the studio again to record their third album simply entitled "THRENODY". Again Gerhard Magin was chosen to produce and the band follows consequently the way they started on "BEWILDERING THOUGHTS". Grooving rock parts meet with progressive tracks and Rene Scholte's aggressive vocals. Ernst van Ee's brilliant and virtuous drumming even tops the drum tracks of the 2nd album easily. With this album THRENODY prove, that they are back in 1997 and recorded their best album so far.
It also showed that the band had to search for new ways to give way to the musical ideas they had. In one word, album number three "Threnody" was the conclusion of an era. Rene Scholte and Henry McIlveen, the only two remaining members of the original lineup of Threnody, searched for new and better ways. They now joined forces with Martijn Spierenburg for a musical project SHADES OF SILENCE which was derived from the Gridlock Project formed in 1996 by McIlveen, Scholte and Spierenburg. Classical arrangements meet the progressive style of Threnody.
At the same time plans are being made to continue with album number four of Threnody. Again with the line up of the third album Threnody. A regular listener of Threnody music will come to find that there is a new approach to the music and lyrics. Again the band evolves. Releases are expected around 2001
